DESCRIPTION:Webb Elementary is the first Elementary School to benefit from our Elementary School Garden initiative.  This initiative will build on our journey with McKinney Roots and the East McKinney Learning Gardens and begin to create school gardens that will enhance the learning of our elementary students. Our goal is to connect our students and community by developing school gardens where students can connect their learning in math\, science and STEAM to real world applications. Our gardens will serve as a means of collaboration\, problem solving and connection for our students. \nAt Webb Elementary we will be reestablishing our gardens!  We want to clean-up the garden beds\, restain them and the benches so the outside courtyard is an inviting extension of the classrooms. \n\nVolunteering Details\n\nRegistration REQUIRED and space is LIMITED sign up on Volunteer McKinney: Webb Elementary School Garden Clean-up and Reestablishment | Volunteer McKinney (galaxydigital.com) \nWhat to bring: Work gloves. When trails are muddy they should not be walked on – walking on muddy trails creates uneven surfaces and can compact soil or cause excessive erosion depending on the damage done. \nWhere: Towne Lake Nature Trail\, 2001 S Central Expy\, McKinney\, TX 75070\, The trail is to the East of the McKinney Recreation Center’s parking lot. Parking and restrooms are available at the Recreation Center at Towne Lake. \nLook for our tent for sign in! \nWhat we will be doing: Using trimmers to clear the trail of overgrowth\, track pickup\, clean the picnic areas\, remove fallen debris on the trail. DESCRIPTION:McKinney Greens Volunteer Workday \nWhere: McKinney Greens Park\, 798 Stewart Rd McKinney\, TX 75069 United States \nWhen: January 20th\, 2024 8 – 11 AM * \nWhat we will be doing: We will be preforming tree care by checking in on the trees planted during the Restore the Canopy Tree Planting Event in 2021. Trees may need to be pushed upright\, tall grass areas trimmed\, litter picked up\, etc. We will also be clearing riparian areas of tall reeds and other aggressive under-story which is not conducive to a healthy creekside. \nThere are also remnants of the Interurban Railway that once used to connect the City of McKinney to surrounding towns. We will be checking in on these & preforming any sort of maintenance needed to help these historical landmarks be visible and clean. Please read about the Interurban Railway by clicking here. \nParking is available on Stewart Road on the right in front of the entrance. The Stewart Rd. entrance can be accessed by turning off of Highway 5 (north of 121\, south of Eldorado). \nWhat to bring: bring a signed waiver\, click here to fill out and print. SUMMARY:Erwin Park Tree Planting\, ‘Shade the Trail’
DESCRIPTION:Where: Erwin Park\, 4300 Co Rd 1006\, McKinney\, TX 75071 \nWhen: November 4th\, 2023. 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM \nParking is available on site and will be marked. \nWhat we will be doing: Erwin Park is amidst change as many areas nearby the park are being developed. To help keep the trails comfortable for walking\, we plan to shade the new trail by planting trees. This is thanks to the City of McKinney’s Park and Recreation Department\, Development Department and their Tree Restoration funding. Trees are beneficial for wildlife\, increase the canopy (reducing heat) and increase privacy of walking trails. \nWe will be planting trees\, this would include labor like digging or filling holes and mulching. There will be about 75 trees to plant\, 30 – 45 gallon size trees. Any needed trail work will be a possible volunteer activity as well if there is time after the planting. Bring bug spray\, sunscreen\, and water. Protective eye wear and sound protection is recommended if you plan to be cutting branches or operating some of the cutting tools. If you bring your own tools\, please have them marked as such so we know they are yours. Please see our Safety Guidelines for more information. \nWhat we will be doing: Erwin Park experienced a beautiful blooming Spring and Summer and many plants have gone to seed. The McKinney Parks Foundation and Erwin Park MTB plan to come together with the help of dedicated Texas Master Naturalists to remove plant dead heads and invasive plants. Prior training is not needed as we will be teaching the difference and needs of both native and invasive plants the day of. Any needed trail work will be a possible volunteer activity as well. \nPlease arrive about 10 minutes early for a safety orientation\, waiver sign in\, and team assignments. \nVolunteers can earn service hours for their school group\, troop\, or club. DESCRIPTION:McKinney Parks Foundation (MPF) is a not-for-profit organization that helps maintain McKinney Park trails. MPF’s newest trail is at Gray Branch Parkland where we’ve created over 4 miles of trails cut through wildflower pastures and deep woods along Wilson Creek and Gray Branch Creek. \nOur first annual MPF Fun Run will provide several levels of runs ranging from a competitive 5k to 1 mile leisure runs. Proceeds will help MPF purchase seed\, trees\, and equipment to maintain these beautiful trails. A portion will also help build the new East McKinney Learning Garden coming later this Fall between the new City Hall and TUPPs campus. \nThis Fun Run will take place August 12th\, 2023 9 AM – NOON. \nYour $25 entry fee includes the run\, prizes\, giveaways\, t-shirt\, and breakfast afterwards at Gray Branch Ranch\, 1244 Gray Branch Road \nPlease register for this event on the website EventBrite. You may bring any tools you may prefer to use as well. DESCRIPTION:Come join us and the Dallas Off-Road Bicycle Association (DORBA) at Erwin Park in McKinney as we get together on October 22\, 2022\, for the Volunteer McKinney Make a Difference Day! \nWhere: Erwin Park\, 4300 Co Rd 1006\, McKinney\, TX 75071 \nWhen: October 22nd\, 2022\, 8 AM – 12 PM \nThis is a family friendly event. \nOur event will entail volunteers painting the various fencing and other wood structures recently added to the park for the new Mountain Bike Skills Area. The raw wood fencing and archways into the skills area will all get painted with traditional park brown outdoor paint to help preserve and protect for many years. \nWe are looking for volunteers to help us complete this task as a community\, and to spend the time with us outdoors helping to improve the park. \nPaint and all painting supplies will be provided\, volunteers that are capable may use ladders provided for any higher reaching archways with a spotter present\, most of the painting will occur at ground level. \nPlease make sure to wear clothing that is appropriate for outdoor sun exposure and that you are ok with getting a little paint on if minor spills or brush splashes occur. \nTo participate\, please sign up through Volunteer McKinney
